Healthy Chicken Kebab Recipe

Healthy Chicken Kebab Ingredients

Many moons ago i used to love picking up a chicken doner kebab/kebob on the way back from the pub. Since then i have become worried about the quality of meat and hygiene available in some takeaways and so therefore have been unable to partake in this excellent post libidinous treat. Fortunately, i think i have developed a recipe that is as tasty as one you would get at the takeaway. This is also a healthy meal, being basically just grilled chicken and salad. Even my mega healthy girlfriend is willing to eat it! So i get to feel like i'm eating fast food and she knows that she is not. What a deal!

You also don't have to have drunk eight pints before eating this meal!

What you will need (for two people with healthy appetites):

2 Free-range chicken breasts

4 Pitta bread (you can use wraps also)

1 tbs oregano

3 garlic cloves peeled and chopped finely

Juice of a lemon

1 tbs extra virgin olive oil

Salt and pepper

Lettuce (round or kos are good), chopped up

1 medium carrot, grated

1 half cucumber

Half an onion, thinly chopped

I medium tomato, chopped into small chunks

100ml yoghurt

1 tsp dried chopped mint

Chilli sauce (if you dare)

Making the healthy chicken kebab

1 Cut the chicken breast into reasonably thin strips and put in a container with a lid. Add the lemon juice, olive oil, oregano, garlic and season. Put lid on container and shake to make sure the marinade covers all the chicken. Put in fridge for at least half an hour but 2 would be better.

2 Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

3 Chop some of the cucumber into small cubes, add it to the yoghurt along with the mint and stir together.

4 Take the chicken out of the fridge, it should smell lovely and fresh. Now cook it on a medium heat. I like to use a griddle for this because it gives the chicken a charred flavour, but a frying pan would work just as well. I like to over cook the chicken so i get some hardened burnt bits like you get at the takeaway.

5 Whilst cooking the chicken, cut open the pitta breads and lay them on a baking tray in the oven for 5 minutes so they are nicely warmed (you can do the wraps on a frying pan if you want).

6 Put everything together and enjoy. Make sure you get some yoghurt and chili sauce on, this really adds to the flavour. Careful, it can get pretty messy so have some kitchen roll handy.

Ha ha, that's the thing. You just need one at a certain time of night (when the pub closes). But they really are quite healthy.

Very nice! I did it a little differently and cooked the chicken in the frying pan until nearly done, then popped it in the over to 'crisp' it up. Tasted really, really nice!

thanks mate, really good recipe. I haven't cooked for about a million years and it was really easy - the misses loved it.
